This painting is based off Bolan’s song ‘We’re the Leopards, feat. Gardenia and the Mighty Slug’ off the T. Rex album ‘Zinc Alloy and the Riders of Tomorrow’. It’s is a mostly nonsensical song about a street gang and it’s members and I’ve painted the title characters as literal representations (leopards, Gardenia, Mighty Slug, and for good measure a white swan). I added an Elvis tshirt because Marc wanted to be Elvis when he was young. He’s holding his Gibson Les Paul all glammy and set on an idealistic English country background.

I love Marc Bolan for the fantasy and characters he brought to his music and performances and although he reached an incredible level of fame before he tragically died I still feel his influence on music to come goes under appreciated.

Being invited to pick any subject to paint for the gallery show he was an easy choice.
