I started a project with a player piano and piano rolls called The Echolodeon Project (you can hear the whole story on Science Friday/NPR/Money Mark) The project is a deep dive into mechanical music which includes piano roll music, music boxes, nickelodeons, etc and takes cues from Jacquard’s early punch card weaving system (1801) that eventually informed what is now called MIDI. I’ve been traveling the world to find these rare music documents. On a 2018 trip to Mexico City I found some early German music box discs(8-inches diameter) Flat metal discs with perforations (raised punches) to cue musical tines that are built into the player. They’re rare and super cool. Much like a record turning but actually playing programmed notes. When you stare at the discs they look like a depiction of a solar system. In order to raise funds to complete this project I created a poster called “Every Song Is A Universe” —- silk screened on canvas.
